Risk Assessment, Statistics and Ethics

The Centre for Innovation Law and Policy (University of Toronto). The centre brings the strengths of varied scholarly disciplines to bear on the many issues arising from the adoption of new technologies in society, and the increased importance of intellectual property to the economy.

Centre for Research on Inner City Health (St Michael's Hospital). St. Michael's Hospital's Inner City Health Research Unit was established in 1998. The focus of the unit's work is to improve access to and delivery of health services, especially primary health care to poor and vulnerable populations. Specific areas of interest include: HIV/AIDS; homelessness; mental health; ambulatory care; socioeconomic status and other issues related to inner city populations. St. Michael's Hospital's Research Unit is the first of it's kind in Canada. Our goal is to be known both locally, nationally, and internationally for our research endeavors.

Centre for Studies in Food Security (Ryerson University).  Established at Ryerson University in 1994, the Centre for Studies in Food Security (CSFS) has been working to promote food security through research, dissemination, education, community action and professional practice. We take an interdisciplinary and systemic approach to the social justice, enviromental sustainability, health and socio-cultural aspects of food security.

Clinical Nutrition and Risk Factor Modification Centre (St. Michael's Hospital).  The Clinical Nutrition and Risk Factor Modification Centre (CNRFMC) at St. Michael's Hospital was launched in 1989 with the primary goal of being a centre for research on nutrition, lifestyle and health. During the past 10 years the research activities of the centre have included major studies on the effect of dietary fibre, vegetable protein and monounsaturated fatty acids on serum cholesterol; studies on the effect of diet on diabetes control and insulin sensitivity; and a major study on risk factors for cardiovascular disease in ethnic populations.

PRIME Clinic (Centre for Addiction and Mental Health). The clinic is dedicated to the early identification and treatment of people ages 14 to 30 who are at risk of developing psychosis. PRIME provides assessment, monitoring and support for young people who are thought to be at imminent risk of developing a psychotic illness. We also serve as a referral point to and from other agencies.

Prosserman Centre for Health Research (Mount Sinai Hospital). Investigators lead innovative genetic and molecular epidemiologic research, whereby new molecular biological concepts and methods are applied in studies of individuals and human populations. These studies focus on complex diseases in human populations and aim to provide better insights into the combined genetic and environmental determinants of disease, to assess the impact of these factors on disease, risk, and to evaluate strategies for disease control.

The University of Toronto Joint Centre for Bioethics (The University of Toronto). The centre is a partnership between the University of Toronto and affiliated healthcare organizations. The JCB studies important ethical, health-related topics through research and clinical activities. The JCB is a network of over 180 multidisciplinary professionals seeking to improve health care standards at both national and international levels.
