Neural and Sensory
Centre for the Neurobiology of Stress (University of Toronto at Scarborough) The centre generates cutting-edge research that employs an integrated approach to the study of the neural stress response, drawing on expertise from the molecular, cellular, physiological and organismal levels of analysis.
Centre for Neurodevelopment and Cognitive Function (Mount Sinai Hospital). Research focuses on using both vertebrate and invertebrate animal model systems to study the development and function of the nervous system. The research interests of the Centre include: (1) studying the fundamental signal transduction cascades and other molecular machineries that govern the development of single neurons to the mammalian brain, (2) establishing the molecular mechanisms that initiate and regulate the formation of connectivity among the developing neurons, (3) analyzing the function of neural circuits in different animal behaviours and (4) establishing animal models to study the case and cure for human neurological/psychiatric diseases.
Centre for Research in Neurodegenerative Diseases (University of Toronto). Research, education and discovery related to neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease.
Centre for Sleep and Chronobiology (University of Toronto). The Centre is composed of sleep disorder laboratories and clinics in eight university- affiliated hospitals to provide diagnostic and treatment services for patients' various sleep related medical disorders. The centre also offers undergraduate, graduate, professional, technical industrial/governement and public educational programs.
Neurosciences Research (Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre). Scientists are working to identify the mechanisms underlying complex neurobiological diseases and to develop innovative strategies to help people recover from devastating illnesses. They are approaching the problem of disease from different perspectives. Those working in the lab are examining molecular interactions in the nervous system. Others are exploring new imaging techniques to map the brains of people with mood disorders. Clinical researchers are developing new rehabilitation and drug therapies. These varied approaches result in an integrated approach to neurological disease that, ultimately, improves clinical care.
Toronto Western Research Institute (University Health Network). Research associated with the neural and sensory sciences, musculoskeletal disease and urban and community health programs.
The University of Toronto Centre for the Study of Pain (University of Toronto). The Centre is a partnership involving the Facilities of Dentistry, Pharmacy, Medicine and Nursing. The mission of the Centre is to lead both nationally and internationally in pain research, education and clinical activities.
