Infectious Disease
Centre for Global Health Research (St. Michael’s Hospital). Ensuring that the remarkable global progress in health of the 21st century reaches the world’s poorest people requires research as well as action. The mission of the Centre for Global Health Research (CGHR), St. Michael's Hospital, University of Toronto is to conduct high-quality research that advances global health. Specific emphasis is on avoidance of two large and growing causes of death worldwide -- HIV-1 and tobacco.
The Department of Medical Genetics and Microbiology (University of Toronto). The Department is home to world-class scientists in the fields of functional genomics and proteomics, human genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, molecular medicine, human genetics, genetics of development, microbiology, virology, cell biology, signal transduction and model organ genetics.
Department of Microbiology (Mount Sinai Hospital). The department is recognized as a center of excellence and has become a prime reference centre for both hospital and private sector laboratories. The facility offers state-of-the-art diagnostic services, infection control programs, method development and research. As an innovation driven team, the group is able to offer the full range of high quality microbiology services from routine cultures and sensitivities to molecular typing of organisms.
Toronto General Research Institute (University Health Network). The Institute's research program encompasses research in cardiology, transplantation, immunology and autoimmunity, infectious diseases, tissue injury and diabetes. Building upon this work, scientists are able to develop improved methods of treatment and cure. Organ transplants, cardiac pacemakers, novel therapies for endocrine and autoimmune disorders-all are based upon research carried out at the Institute's laboratories and clinics.
