Facilities

An introductory short list of our members’ facilities, centers and programs associated with specific research areas is given below. Please see Members section for complete listings

Cardiovascular

Heart and Circulation Research Program (Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre). Scientists are developing and evaluating new treatments for ischemic heart disease (lack of blood and oxygen to the heart), valvular diseases, high blood pressure, congestive heart failure and electrophysiological disorders such as arrhythmia. Because of its strong partnerships with industry, new discoveries made at SWRI are transferred quickly into improvements in health care technology and practice to benefit our patients. Heart & Circulation scientists work closely with the Schulich Heart Centre clinical team.

The Heart & Stroke/Richard Lewar Centre of Excellence (University of Toronto). The Centre is focused on the prevention and cure of atherosclerosis, heart failure and congenital heart disease, using cutting edge tools such as molecular genetics. From this research will evolve diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic innovations that can impact on the health of all Canadians.

HOPE Research Centre (Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre).  HOPE is a multidisciplinary group consisting of scientists and economic analysts that is allied with major research areas in Cardiovascular, Oncology, Mental Health and Infectious Diseases

HOPE conducts research in health economics, pharmacoeconomics, health outcomes and technology assessment relevant to academia, formulary bodies, decision makers, the pharmaceutical industry and third party payers.

Imaging Research Centre for Cardiac Intervention (Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre).  The Imaging Research Centre for Cardiac Intervention (IRCCI) in the Schulich Heart Centre is a state-of-the-art facility funded primarily by the Canada Foundation for Innovation and Ontario Innovation Trust (now the Ontario Research Fund). As a central resource serving multiple institutions, it brings together basic scientists and clinical researchers from SRI and academic centres around the city, province and further afield.

Schulich Heart Centre (Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre).  Schulich Heart Centre delivers a full spectrum of in-hospital and ambulatory cardiovascular care, significantly improving the quality of life for patients with heart conditions in Canada.

From intervention to surgery to advanced clinical research, Schulich Heart Centre is the academic cardiovascular centre for Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and a national leader in cardiac care.  Services include emergency cardiac care, diagnostic and interventional procedures, cardiac surgery, electrophysiology, cardiac rhythm management and an ambulatory cardiology practice including the Women’s Cardiovascular Health Initiative, a prevention and rehabilitation program.

Toronto Angiogenesis Research Centre (Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre).  In this CFI- and ORF-funded project, angiogenesis researchers are studying the mechanisms of blood vessel growth. They aim to prevent and improve treatment for diseases related to vessel growth, including heart disease, cancer and age-related macular degeneration.

Toronto General Research Institute (University Health Network). The Institute's research program encompasses research in cardiology, transplantation, immunology and autoimmunity, infectious diseases, tissue injury and diabetes. Building upon this work, scientists are able to develop improved methods of treatment and cure. Organ transplants, cardiac pacemakers, novel therapies for endocrine and autoimmune disorders-all are based upon research carried out at the Institute's laboratories and clinics.
