David B. Shindler, Ph.D.

Dr. Shindler has recently been appointed as Executive Director of BioDiscovery Toronto. BioDiscovery Toronto comprises 9 of Toronto's leading research universities and hospital research institutes, and has a mandate to enhance technology transfer and commercialization based on Toronto's world-class biomedical research. BioDiscovery Toronto is developing strategic relationships with local and international industry partners to further its commercial objectives. BioDiscovery's office is located at MaRS, in the core of Toronto's Discovery District.

Dr. Shindler previously served for 6 years as founding President and CEO of Milestone Medica Corporation, a seed venture investment and management company, working with Canada's top biomedical research centres in order to create innovative health products. The fund is fully invested and he is currently a Director of the Corporation.

Between 1990 and 1998, Dr. Shindler served as Senior Executive and Commercial Director of the Canadian Genetic Diseases Network, headquartered at UBC, Vancouver. Before that, with Industry Canada he was responsible for Canada's National Biotechnology Strategy, and also served as Counselor - Science and Technology, at the Canadian High Commission in London, England.

His Ph.D. is from the University of Ottawa with specialization in microbiology and biochemistry.

Dr. Chris Riddle

Dr. Chris Riddle has extensive Canadian public policy and program experience in areas of research and development, innovation, and competitiveness.

From 1977 to 2001 Dr. Riddle held a variety of science- and policy-related positions with the Ontario government, rising to the position of Assistant Deputy Minister for Science and Technology. Starting in the mid-1990s Chris was responsible for the development and implementation of a series of major R&D programs in Ontario including the R&D Challenge Fund; the Premier's Research Excellence Awards; the Research Performance Fund, Ontario's Centres of Excellence program and Ontario's International S&T agreements.

On leaving the Ontario Public Service in 2001, Dr. Riddle was appointed Executive Director of the Institute for Competitiveness and Prosperity in support of the provincially funded Task Force on Competitiveness, Productivity and Economic Progress, chaired by Roger Martin, Dean, the Rotman School of Management. Dr. Riddle continues to serve on the Board of the Institute.

Recently, Dr. Riddle has been involved in a number of Studies for the Office of the National Science Advisor and the Prime Minister's Advisory Council on Science and Technology.

In 2001, the Premier of Ontario presented Dr. Riddle with an Amethyst Award for outstanding public service fostering science and technology in government, academia, industry and public life.

Technology Advisory Group

The Technology Advisory Group (TAG) consists of the Directors of Technology Transfer/Business Development from each of the member institutions, and representatives from the local biopharmaceutical industry and financing industry. The activities of the Group include technology bundling and collaborative applications for commercialization funding, typically from federal and provincial programs. The TAG is both a consultative group and a decision making group for specific projects led by TAG Directors or technology transfer staffers. Our TAG members are:
